What Car Tires to Buy
Who’s discount tires are best?
Not an easy question. Take a look at any consumer organization that actually
tracks this stuff, and a few clear patterns can be spelled out. These
are the car tires that won the last 14 Consumer Reports tests:
Pirelli, Bridgestone, BF Goodrich, Dayton, Toyo, Michelin, Pirelli, Firestone,
Uniroyal, Goodyear, Kumho, Dunlop, Falken, Goodyear. J.D. Power shows
Pirelli topping consumer satisfaction in original-equipment tires and
Michelin topping satisfaction in replacement tires. The majority
of discount tire brands were inconsistent, scoring above-average
in one test and below-average in others. Along with Goodyear, Michelin
is known to have premium car tire prices.
Michelin and Pirelli tires are on the high side,
but Kumho seemingly has no business as the second-best out of 16 when
J.D. Power’s study showed it second-worst out of 13. Firestone is
rock-bottom, again, but severe bias is a likely factor, especially considering
that Bridgestone is at the top. Overall, it seems that Michelin and Pirelli
are the only car tires that never show any major weaknesses. Between
the two, Pirelli seems to be a better car tire.
Where to Buy your Discount Tires
After settling on what to tires to buy
comes the question of where to buy the tires. Casual studies have shown
that mail-order companies like Tire Rack and Discount Tire Direct have
the lowest car tire prices. Shopping for discount
tires online also lets you take your time, see everything available,
and make a more careful selection. Of course, you’ll have to go
to the trouble of taking the car tires to a place that will mount and
balance them for you, which will cost an extra $10 per tire at the very
least. The main drawback of warehouse clubs like Costco is a limited selection.
